Minecraft: The Complete Guide (From Your First Night to the Ender Dragon)

Minecraft is more than a game. It’s a cultural landmark. It’s a digital box of infinite LEGOs, a hardcore survival challenge, and a complex engineering tool all in one. With no set goals, no tutorial, and no instructions, its greatest strength is also its biggest hurdle for new players: What do I do?

You start in a vast, beautiful, and dangerous world with nothing but your hands. 10 minutes later, the sun is setting, and you’re being hunted by zombies and exploding Creepers.

As veteran players who have built megastructures and survived hundreds of nights in Hardcore mode, we’ve created the definitive guide. This is the complete walkthrough to take you from punching your first tree to flying on your own Elytra.

Part 1: Your First Night (The 10-Minute Survival Goal)

Your first day is a race against the clock. The goal is to get tools, food, and shelter before the monsters (or “mobs”) spawn at night.

  1. Get Wood: Find a tree and hold down the attack button to punch it. Collect about 5-10 wood logs.
  2. Make a Crafting Table: Open your inventory. Place your logs into the 2×2 crafting grid to turn them into Planks. Place four planks in the 2×2 grid to create a Crafting Table.
  3. Make a Wooden Pickaxe: Place the Crafting Table on the ground. Use it to craft Sticks (2 planks, one on top of the other). Then, make a Wooden Pickaxe (3 planks on top, 2 sticks below).
  4. Get Stone: Use your Wooden Pickaxe to mine Stone (or Cobblestone). Get about 20 pieces.
  5. Upgrade Your Tools: Go back to your Crafting Table. Make a Stone Pickaxe, Stone Axe, and Stone Sword. These are much faster and more durable.
  6. Find Shelter & Light: As the sun sets, dig a small hole in the side of a dirt hill or mountain. This is your first base. Use your Stone Axe to get more wood and craft a Furnace (8 Cobblestone). If you found Coal while mining, you can craft Torches (1 Coal, 1 Stick). If not, use the Furnace to turn 1 Wood Log into 1 Charcoal, which works just like Coal.
  7. Survive: Block your entrance with dirt, place your torches, and wait for morning. You survived.

Part 2: Gearing Up (Iron, Diamonds & Farming)

You can’t live in a dirt hut forever. Your next goal is to get Iron.

Finding Iron & Diamonds

Iron is the most important resource in the early game. You can find its ore (speckled, brownish stone) in caves or on cliff-faces. You must smelt the Iron Ore in a Furnace to get Iron Ingots.

With Iron, you can craft:

  • Iron Armor: A full set (helmet, chest, leggings, boots) will protect you.
  • Iron Pickaxe: This is the only pickaxe that can mine Diamonds.
  • A Bucket: Crucial for carrying water to start a farm.
  • A Shield: A must-have item for blocking arrows and Creeper explosions.

Building a Sustainable Base

Your base needs a few essentials:

  • A Bed: (Crafted with 3 Wool and 3 Planks). This sets your spawn point and lets you skip the night.
  • Chests: For storing your items.
  • A Farm: Use your Bucket to create a water source, then use a Hoe (crafted with 2 sticks and 2 planks/stone) on the nearby dirt to plant Seeds (from breaking tall grass). This gives you a permanent food source (Wheat for bread).

Part 3: The Magic Systems (Enchanting & Potions)

Now that you’re surviving, it’s time to get powerful.

Enchanting

An Enchanting Table (crafted with Diamonds and Obsidian) lets you apply permanent magic buffs to your armor, weapons, and tools.

  • How it works: You need Lapis Lazuli to power the enchanting. To get the best enchantments, you must surround your table with 15 Bookshelves.
  • Must-Have Enchantments:
    • Pickaxe: Fortune III (get more diamonds) or Silk Touch (pick up fragile blocks).
    • Sword: Sharpness V (more damage) and Looting III (more drops from mobs).
    • Armor: Protection IV (the best all-around defense).

Potions

A Brewing Stand lets you craft potions for temporary buffs, like fire resistance, night vision, or healing.

Part 4: The Nether (The “Hell” Dimension)

Your journey now takes you to a different dimension.

  • How to Get There: You must build a Nether Portal frame out of Obsidian (a hard, black block) and light it with a Flint and Steel.
  • Why Go? The Nether is the only place to find Blaze Rods (to power your Brewing Stand and craft Eyes of Ender) and Netherite (the material needed to upgrade your Diamond gear to the highest tier).

Part 5: The End (Beating the Game)

The “final boss” of Minecraft is the Ender Dragon.

To find her, you must find a Stronghold (a rare, underground structure) using Eyes of Ender. Once you find the portal room, you’ll travel to The End, a dark, floating island.

[Internal Link] -> This is the final challenge. Learn the strategy in our boss guide: How to Find and Beat the Ender Dragon (Step-by-Step)

After defeating the Dragon, you can explore the outer End Cities to find the Elytra, a pair of wings that let you fly.

Part 6: The “Real” Game Begins (Creativity & Mods)

Beating the Dragon is just the beginning. The true “endgame” of Minecraft is whatever you want it to be.

  • Building: Create massive castles, futuristic cities, or complex Redstone contraptions.
  • Servers: Join thousands of other players on public servers to play mini-games like Bedwars and Skyblock.
  • Mods & Shaders: Change the game completely. Mods add new items and creatures, while Shaders make the game look breathtakingly realistic.

Minecraft FAQ

Q: How do I tame a wolf (dog)?

Feed a wild wolf (found in forest biomes) Bones (from skeletons) until hearts appear and it gets a red collar. It will then follow and protect you.

Q: How do I find my house if I get lost?

Before you explore, always write down the coordinates (press F3 on PC or enable in settings) of your base. You can also craft a Compass, which will always point to your original world spawn point.

Q: What’s the best level for finding Diamonds?

Diamonds are most common around Y-level -58. The best way to find them is to “strip mine” (dig a long, 2-block-high tunnel) at that level.
